Pytanie: How to help my dog lose weight?

( Wstecz )

Answer #1:

Finding grain free dog food isn't hard. There are quite a few out there. I have a dog with allergies, she is fed Natural Balance duck and potato dog food.

Your dog needs grain free food. Restrict her portions. Start feeding her on a schedule. What she doesn't eat after 15 minutes is to be removed until dinner time.

No more treats unless you switch to something like Benny Bully's Liver Chops. They are pure freeze dried liver. Low calorie, high protein, no chemicals, preservatives, salt, low fat. Dogs love them.

Even then, treats are called treats for a reason. No one is entitled to an endless supply of treats every day. Your dog must earn treats. Use them to train her with. She should not get a treat for doing nothing.

Walk your dog twice a day. Walking your dog occasionally is not good enough, as you can tell by looking at your dog. You should have her on two 30 minute walks a day. (my dog does 2.5 miles twice a day but your dog is smaller and out of shape so start small, like a couple of blocks and work your way up to more). Terriers are high energy dogs, once you get her going and back in shape, she should have endless energy.

I would suggest a high-quality food such as Orijen. They have a 100% animal ingredient dry kibble that will help take care of the allergy problem and has the required nutrients packed into it, so you don't need to supplement.

If you aren't opposed to it, I would think about raw feeding, I have included a website in the sources that gives a great intro to it. Again, deals with your allergy issues, is a more natural diet for your terrier, and should help with weight loss.

You haven't mentioned what kind of terrier, however the terrier group tends to be very high-energy, so daily walks would be a good idea.

Answer #3:

Walk, walk, walk. Don't do too much at once, though. Especially if she isn't used to walking yet. If her paws are not tough yet, it could hurt her feet. If her feet get hurt you have to wait for them to heal before walking again, which means even less exercise. Maybe half a mile twice a day.
Stop free feeding, and measure the amount you give her based on the dog food bag (if you do not already). Free feeding not only makes for a lousy schedule for the dog, but you can't tell how much she is actually eating. If you make her eat at certain times, you can monitor the amount of food she is actually eating as opposed to what you think she could be eating. Plus it entices her to eat when she should and puts her on a better potty schedule. And it can increase the bond between you and your dog, because she sees you as more of a leader and the source of her needs!
Best of luck to you and your pooch!

Don't cut the food down - up the exercise and stop free-feeding! Assuming she is not elderly and physically in good health, 2 decent daily walks every day (one before breakfast and one mid afternoon / early evening - 35-45 mins for each one, and make sure she has plenty of time off the lead to have a run about) will do wonders, and you will notice a big difference within a month.

Get rid of all the crappy treats and get some raw carrots and apple - great for the teeth and dogs seem to love them. A couple of carrots a day to chew on is much better than treats Decent hypoallergenic foods include Burns (dry), James Wellbeloved (dry and wet available), Arden Grange (dry), Orijen (dry), Barking Heads (dry) and Naturediet (wet) (all can be found on the internet), but all should be introduced gradually over 4-5 days to avoid any stomach upset.

Leave around 45 minutes - 1 hour between exercise and feeding to avoid the possibility of bloat. Split your dog's daily ration of food into two meals, morning and evening. Put the bowl down for 10 minutes - if she doesn't touch it or picks at it and walks away, take the bowl away. Do not give her next meal until the allocated time. She will soon understand that she needs to eat at the time the food is put in front of her! It will be much easier for you in the long run. By all means give her a couple of carrots or apple during the course of the day - that's not going to fill her up if she's regularly exercising!

Another thing is that dry food on it's own can be very boring for a dog - try mixing some wet food in as well - often does the trick.

Daily walks are just about the most important thing for any dog - without them they can lose condition, become lacklustre, depressed, overweight and develop behavioural problems, to mention just a few consequences!

Hope this helps

Answer #5:

If you dog is not used to being exorcise (i.e. walked everyday) just as a human out of shape needs to start slow to avoid injury so will she,. If you take her around the block twice a day and add in working for one of her meals by using it as training rewards and/ or putting it in a Buster cube or Kong type to and making her work for it. If you are feeding her treating fine, but you need to adjust the amount of kibble you give her to account for the calories she is getting from treats.
